Thank you for visiting J-Quilts longarm quilting services
Hello, I am Janette Chilver and I am a longarm quilter in Colchester Essex, offering hand guided quilting services to patchworkers and quilters who wish to have their quilts professionally machine quilted.
I use an APQS (American professional quilting system) stitch regulated longarm machine and frame from my dedicated studio and can discuss your design requirements in detail with you either over the telephone, by email, or in person.
None of my work is computerised.
If you are not in my local area, you can post your quilt top to me, then I will quilt it to your specification and return it to you.
Services include
- Edge to edge quilting using pantograph designs
- Quilting using the circle lord attachment for perfect circles and other template designs
- Basting services for handquilters
- Freehand meanders/stipples and other freehand designs
- Simple custom work using rulers and templates and freehand designs
I have a wide variety of pantograph designs and some templates, which are constantly being expanded. If the type of design that you need is not held in stock, I will be happy to source any design available.
Template board patterns are available and currently include swirls, baptist fans, hoops, clamshells, and square spirals.
"Edge to edge" or "Allover" means that the same design is quilted all over the quilt from one edge to the other from the top to the bottom of the quilt. If the quilt has borders, blocks or applique, the design is quilted over the borders and applique.
"Custom" means that there will be a different treatment of the borders, sashings and blocks and also takes any applique into consideration to the specification of my customer, this type of work also includes ruler work, template work and freehand work.
I offer freehand designs, such as the meander/stipple, and other allover freehand designs.
Custom work is charged on a time basis and is as a general rule more costly than "edge to edge allover" quilting due to the time taken for the more individual needs of a custom quilted quilt. Although in some cases if there is less or simpler quilting and takes less time, then this will be less costly.
Please ask if I have not listed the service required above, if it is of a more specific nature.

More about me .......
I have always sewn and knitted from when I was a little girl, and my first sewing machine was bought as a Christmas present from my parents when I was ten years old. I still own this lovely Jones hand cranked machine and will never sell it because it is part of my childhood. The feeling of excitement coming downstairs on Christmas morning and opening such a wonderful present forms part of my happy childhood memories.
I started to make lots of dolls clothes for my Sindy dolls, and then moved on to make clothes for myself, followed by curtains, cushions and home interiors over the years. However, it wasn't until I discovered patchwork and quilting that I truly knew what addiction was and have been quilting ever since. I am constantly feeding this passion, learning new methods of patchworking and quilting of which there are so many different methods and techniques, I am constantly learning new skills. I have now been patchwork and quilting for about 9 years now.
I love the look and effect of hand quilting, but quickly discovered that it wasn' t for me, I was too slow to keep up with my need to make more quilts using different methods and design. So I began to quilt on my domestic sewing machine, but in time became bored with quilting in straight lines and moved onto free motion quilting. Although I was happy quilting smaller quilts in this way, the larger quilts were more difficult to manoevure under my sewing machine and although I continued to quilt this way for a while, I very quickly needed more ! Although I never dreamed at that stage that I would end up owning a longarm quilting machine.
I discovered through the internet and quilting magazines "frame quilting" and imported a handiquilter table top frame and handi handles from the USA which I used with my Bernina 440QE for around 12 months and achieved some lovely results before deciding that I wanted much more quilting space as I progressed. After serious consideration back in 2009, I decided to upgrade to my current APQS longarm machine and frame which I absolutely love and have never looked back.....
